500 million year old embryo Photo Credit: Shuhai XiaoEmbryos undergoing cell division fossilized – Fossilized remains of a 600 million-year-old embryonic sponge-like animal have been unearthed in China. The embryos apparently met disaster whilst in the process of dividing, giving scientists a unique look at early cell division events in ancient animals. Small organelles were detectable within some of the cells.

Determining the value of ancient medicines – A recent study investigated the curative properties of traditional medicines, such as turmeric, in treating arthritis. The NIH funded research shows that turmeric did indeed relieve some of the symptoms of arthritis in rats. This is part of a larger study applying rigorous scientific practices to determining the efficacy of traditional medicines.

These tiny mushrooms live primarily in tropical forests. Scientists are still working to understand why these mushrooms glow.

Eat, Drink, and Be Merry – Scientists have found that resveratrol, a chemical found in the skin of grapes, prolongs life (of mice). Don’t get too carried away with the drinking though – it would take 300 glasses of wine per day to receive the life-prolonging benefits of resveratrol. Fortunately, if further study supports these findings, a pill form of resveratrol will undoubtedly be in the making.
