Two-Thousand -Year-Old Seed Germinates - a date seed tossed aside as waste 2000 years ago has germinated under the care of Dr. Elaine Soloway of the Arava Institute. This is the oldest seed on record to have been sucessfully germinated.
The date tree is aptly named Methuselah after the oldest living person mentioned in the Bible. The tree is florishing. Unfortunately, it will be 20 years before we know if the date tree is male or female – and whether humans will once again taste the fruit of the ancient date tree. The Trees and People website has also covered this story.
