“Acai” of Relief

“Acai” of Relief

With research showing that the Brazilian Acai berry contains twice the antioxidants of a blueberry, health-nuts everywhere can start their spring-cleaning early and make room in the pantry for the newest craze in “super-foods.” Amherst College’s Acai Report in 2005 reveals that the Acai berry contains 10 times more antioxidants than red grapes and 10 to 30 times more anthocyanin than red wine.

The Brazilian Acai berry resembles a blueberry in size, but has much more claim to health benefits than its berry “cousin.” Consumers of the Acai berry might claim to experience increased energy, resistance to colds/flu, a more youthful appearance to the skin, improved eye sight and circulation, prevention of degenerate diseases, promotion in weight loss, and even a slowing of the aging process.

Dr. Susanne Talcott of Texas AgriLife Research conducted tests on the human body’s ability to absorb Acai’s pulp and juice and reported increases of antioxidant activity in the blood. Other studies have linked the berry to preventing cancer cell development. The Journal of Agricultural Food and Chemistry reported that nearly 86 percent of leukemia cells self-destruct upon the addition of Acai chemicals made from the pulp and juice.

Scientists believe that this “super-food” has many valuable qualities, but will not ultimately alleviate all diseases. While Acai berries may not be the answer for a cure, people can possibly snack with a freer conscience knowing what health benefits this super-berry has to offer.

Discussion Question: What other “super-foods” have health benefits such as the ones found in the Brazilian Acai berry?
