A new muscadine grape cultivar named ‘Delicious’ (Vitis rotundifolia Michx.) has been introduced by University of Florida researchers. Of course, this most likely means that this new grape is delectable, but the appetizing new species of grapes has other benefits for us all.
First of all, the grape ripens early, which is good for farmers because it will take less time to grow and ship out to grocers. The early-ripening and high yields also benefit the consumers, because if farmers are getting more grapes for the same land-plot, the price may lower. The skin of the grape has a unique texture and an exceptional taste. The skin of the grape is also edible, meaning non-wine lovers and wine lovers alike can indulge in the joys this new grape can bring. If the grape is allowed to ripen more, the semicrunchy flesh becomes softer and the fruit becomes much juicier.
Early ripening and high yields are not the only tricks that this new grape brings to the trade. The grape is also highly disease resistant, which not only saves farmers the headache of replacing or treating their crops, but it also helps minimize the chance that consumers get affected by diseases traversing through a farm’s crops. Who knows, maybe these grapes won’t even need sunscreen!
Discussion question: How many varieties of grapes are available at your grocery store?
